About the Author

One of my goals has been to author a book about my 30 years of service in the U.S. Army.  I am happy to present “When The Bugle Calls" - A Soldier's Memoir.

A labor of love, this story begins in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed and
ends in 1991 when I retired from Army service. I have put to paper my
experiences, reflections, stories, and takeaways from this amazing 50- year period of our history. It is a story that captures a spirit that will resonate with many people, not just those who served in the military.

The road taken...

A 30-year U.S. Military Veteran, Ray Boland was a rural Wisconsin public school teacher before his National Guard unit was called to active duty in 1961.  Ray has a Master of Science degree in Communications from Shippensburg State University in Pennsylvania.  He is a graduate of numerous military professional education courses, including the U.S. Army War College.

After retiring from the Army, Ray completed a second career in Wisconsin State Government as the Secretary of Veteran Affairs.  Retired, he resides with his wife, Donna, in Sparta, Wisconsin.  He was 86 years young when this book was published.
